The installation should account for fan-rated support, wiring, controls and the manufacturer’s location requirements. An existing light fixture does not establish that its electrical box can support a ceiling fan.
Identify what is already in place
Tell the contractor whether there is an existing fan, a light fixture or no ceiling wiring. A new location may need wiring, a switch and access through the ceiling. Reusing a location still calls for a check of the mounting support and existing wiring.
Match the fan to the room
Share the ceiling height, room dimensions and whether the location is indoors, under a covered patio or exposed to weather. The contractor can review the fan’s listing and installation instructions, including mounting and clearance requirements.
Plan controls and access
Discuss wall switches, remote controls and any separate light control. Tall or sloped ceilings may require additional access equipment or mounting components. Confirm whether assembly, removal of the old fixture and disposal are included in the quote.
