A panel replacement and a service-capacity increase are different projects. An electrician should assess equipment condition and electrical demand before recommending an upgrade. An EV charger does not automatically mean you need a larger service.
Start with the reason for the upgrade
Tell the contractor whether the concern is damaged equipment, a lack of circuit spaces or a new electrical load. Ask for an explanation of the existing service capacity and how the proposed work addresses your specific need. Panel age or an empty breaker position alone does not establish usable capacity.
Compare the options before changing the service
Depending on the assessment, the options may include replacing equipment, adding circuit space, managing an additional load or increasing service capacity. A subpanel creates distribution space; it does not by itself increase the capacity supplied to the property. Ask which alternatives are suitable for your home.
Plan the permit, utility and outage steps
A service change may involve the permitting authority and utility as well as the electrician. Ask who coordinates each approval, when power will be interrupted and what inspections must be completed before reconnection. Mention any medical equipment or other needs that make an outage difficult.
Read the scope beyond the panel itself
Compare grounding and bonding work, meter equipment, circuit labeling, wall repairs and inspection costs. Ask which items are included, what might change the price and what documentation you receive at completion. A written scope makes competing proposals easier to compare.

Questions before you book
Do I automatically need 200-amp service?
No. The appropriate service capacity depends on your home, existing loads and planned additions. Ask the contractor for an assessment rather than choosing a capacity from a generic rule.
Will a subpanel solve a capacity problem?
A subpanel can provide circuit positions but does not increase the service capacity. The contractor needs to check available electrical capacity as well as space.
